I’ve been quietly and somewhat anxiously waiting for today for two months.

“Why?” You may ask. The answer is simple and complicated all at the same time: Mad Men.

It’s one of those TV shows that really sounded like I should be watching, but as usual, I came late to the party. I started trying to watch on TV sometime midway through the second season. But by then, storylines had been established, characters had been developed, and honestly it just didn’t grab me by then.

Netflix started streaming Mad Men today. I’d had it in my DVD queue for a while, but at the rate I’m making my way through that, I wasn’t going to get to disk one of season one until sometime after Patrick got married. But if it’s streaming, then I can watch whenever I want and almost wherever I want in the house or somewhere on the internet…Except work. So I started watching the show tonight while I walked on the treadmill. I walked a mile in just under 20 minutes and got the grand introduction to Don Draper and some of the others at the advertising agency he works for.

Yes, it’s motivational: a cheap excuse for me to exercise while trying to digest some pop culture. That’s the carrot dangling in front of me.

See, I’m not huge into television. I mean, I enjoy watching shows, and there are shows that I will watch if I’m in front of the TV and flipping around. But I don’t go out of my way to catch a show. I don’t know why, but there are few things on TV that are a “destination” for me. But that isn’t to say that I don’t enjoy TV shows–there are several that I’ve watched and loved: Doc Martin, Corner Gas, The IT Crowd, The West Wing, Deadliest Catch, and the like. But I’ve never started watching them from the beginning. And part of it is that I just don’t seem to be able to look at a show before an episode has aired and been able to figure out if I’d like it or not. Jenni can do that, and I really do admire it.

So for now, I’ll exercise and catch up on a show that I’ve been told I’d like. I’ve only got 4 seasons to catch up on…What will I watch after that?

See you tomorrow.
