For those not in “the know,” there are a growing group of people out there who are members of what is commonly known as the “Cult of Mac.” These people are fans of every product Apple puts out, which is perfectly fine as is, but they’re obsessive and fanatical about their love of all things Mac: computers, the iPad, iPhones, iPods, etcetera.

For a while, that rabid fandom was funny, or just over the top, or cute, even. But over the last year or two, it’s turned into full-fledged snobbery.

So, here’s the exchange I had on a call today:

Me: So, when you change your password on the network, you then need to also go into your account settings on your iPad and…

Snob: iPad 2…

Me: Right. Change your password in the account settings on your iPad…

Snob: iPad 2…

Me: (Really? For the love of…) Yes. On your iPad.

Snob: iPad 2…

So by now, I’m sure she’s one of those people who buys everything that’s a current, hot brand. And never, ever strays into unbranded territory. She’s probably stroking the Mercedes or Lexus fob on her key chain right now.

Me: (At this point, it’s becoming a game. She’s insistent about that damned 2.) Well, people think that the password doesn’t update automatically on their iPad.

Snob: iPad 2…

She’s making sure her Gucci purse is zippered shut now.

Me: iPad…

Snob: iPad 2…

I suppose she could be a poor snob, only driving a VW bug. But that makes the story less fun.

Me: i…

Snob: i…

Me: …Pad…

Snob: …Pad2…

There’s no real difference between the iPad and the iPad 2, at least not when it comes to the things you do with them in our environment. But to argue with me over something as stupid as a number 2? Need I point out that she called me?

Oh well. Just more of what I have to deal with on a daily basis. I’m living the dream, I tell you.

See you tomorrow.
