Wednesday. Hump day. The middle of the week. The rest is all downhill.

Theoretically.

I’m really starting to think that people who came up with some of our most popular sayings didn’t have kids or a family. Hump day is an illusion: sure it’s the middle of the week, but anyone who has a family knows that the weekend is just the transition from one set of duties to another. God may have rested on the seventh day, but no amount of scripture has been able to make sure the Sabbath is kept holy by us lunatic humans. Heck, even the church has its people working on the weekend.

Anyway, go is a constant in life. So hump day is really just another marker in the passage of time.

Ah, but time passes. Patrick has his second trimester conference tomorrow. He’s doing well, but he has a lot of his father in him when it comes to school–he’s old enough and smart enough to understand how the system works, so working the system comes easy and skimming by on the bare minimum of effort required is easy. But, what only experience teaches you is that catching up as a result of doing the bare minimum takes more effort than what you would have spent in the first place.

Ah, life. Is there any part of it that doesn’t have a catch to it?

See, I’ve been on a quest lately, to find as many freebies and coupon deals online as I can. Now, as we all know, there’s the saying that nothing in the world is free. So it’s been with some of the freebies–I know that most of what the companies want is my information so they can populate their address lists. But then, at some point in the process, a page might pop up wanting something else–a survey filled out, another offer extended, purchase of something else. So those that need additional action on my part usually get the heave ho–certainly if they require money, because then the freebie is no longer…well…free.

So what’s with the quest for freebies? It’s part obsession and part challenge. I pride myself on some of the bargain hunting I do–my ability to usually use a minimum of $15 in coupons when grocery shopping on a weekly basis, and the careful hunt for cost savings whenever I can find them. But it’s the next step in that effort: the free stuff I’m trying to score is usually stuff I want, not need; and the coupons contribute to getting stuff I need, just cheaper. And I’ll admit to this: it’s a challenge that has turned into a kind of game…A game to see just how much I can find.

So, sometime over the next three to eight weeks, I should be getting packages of freebies arriving at the doorstep. Maybe I’ll share news of the spoils of the war. Whoa! Great idea! Sporadic content filler! Bonus reason for the quest!

That’ll get me over the hump.

See you tomorrow.
